Glossary
New to personality typing, or to CharacterDex? Here's the vocabulary in plain language. Every type here is community opinion, for fun — never a clinical verdict.
Core concepts
- Personality type
- A label for a recognisable pattern of personality — how a character thinks, feels, and acts. CharacterDex tracks several different type systems (frameworks) side by side.
- Type code
- The short code a framework uses for a type — four letters like INFP for the 16-type system, a number like 8w7 for the Enneagram, or a sign like Scorpio for the zodiac.
- Community vote
- One vote per device, per character, per framework. Votes are how the community types a character; we always show the running count, never a single hand-picked answer.
- Consensus
- How much the community agrees on a character's type. We show the leading type, the share of votes it holds, and how many votes there are — so you can judge for yourself.
Consensus & confidence
- Provisional
- Fewer than 10 votes so far for a framework. The leading type is an early guess and can still change — we label it so you know it isn't settled.
- High consensus
- The community strongly agrees: the leading type holds 60% or more of the votes.
- Contested
- The votes are split — no single type has a strong majority. Often a sign of a genuinely complex character.
Card rarity
On your shareable card, a character's rarity reflects how dominant its leading type is — the stronger the agreement, the rarer the card.
- Common
- The leading type has under 30% of the votes — a loose, open call.
- Uncommon
- The leading type has 30–40% of the votes.
- Rare
- The leading type has 40–50% of the votes.
- Epic
- The leading type has 50–60% of the votes — a clear favourite.
- Legendary
- The leading type has 60% or more of the votes — the community is nearly of one mind.
The frameworks
- 16-Type Personality
- “MBTI” (often called Myers-Briggs) is a model that sorts personality into 16 four-letter types like INFP or ENTJ. CharacterDex uses it just for fun to let the community type characters — we're not affiliated with the official MBTI® assessment, and nothing here is a diagnosis. Learn more
- Enneagram
- The Enneagram is a model of nine core personality types, numbered 1 to 9, each driven by a different underlying motivation. CharacterDex uses it for fun to let the community type characters — it's entertainment, not a diagnosis. Learn more
- Big Five (OCEAN)
- The Big Five (also called OCEAN or the Five Factor Model) describes personality with five broad traits rather than a single type. CharacterDex shows it for fun — it's entertainment framing, not a diagnosis. Learn more
- Zodiac
- Zodiac signs are the twelve astrological star signs, from Aries to Pisces. CharacterDex shows them purely for fun — a playful lens on a character, never a measurement or a diagnosis. Learn more
- Affection Styles
- Affection styles describe how someone prefers to give and receive care — the idea popularly known as the “love languages”. CharacterDex uses it for fun to type characters; we're not affiliated with The 5 Love Languages®, and nothing here is advice. Learn more
